In Good Company Podcast: Why I Chose Psalm 23 for Season 1

When I was six years old, I played my first season of soccer. Playing defense came naturally, but shooting was a different story. I'm a bit pigeon-toed, which helped with dribbling but made shooting difficult. The ball would spin sideways instead of hitting my mark.

One day my coach walked up behind me and adjusted my standing foot—the one I wasn't kicking with. He turned it ever so slightly and said something I've never forgotten: "Sharie, wherever your foot points, the ball will follow."

That adjustment changed everything.

Wherever Your Heart Points, Your Life Will Follow

I've reflected on that moment often—not just on the soccer field, but in my spiritual life. Wherever our heart is focused, our actions will follow. The position of our hearts determines the direction of our lives.

That's what the new season of In Good Company is all about.

Introducing: Learning to Live Faithfully

Over the next six weeks, we're walking through Psalm 23 together—not as a familiar passage we've heard since childhood, but as a roadmap for everyday faithfulness. Each episode explores a different spiritual discipline:

  • Episode 1: Self-Discipline (Psalm 23:1)

  • Episode 2: Sabbath and Solitude (Psalm 23:2)

  • Episode 3: Wisdom and Discernment (Psalm 23:3)

  • Episode 4: Prayer and Lament (Psalm 23:4)

  • Episode 5: Hospitality and Community (Psalm 23:5)

  • Episode 6: Gratitude and Worship (Psalm 23:6)

Why Spiritual Disciplines?

David didn't write Psalm 23 from theory—he wrote from experience. His everyday walk with God shaped the theology in this Psalm. To help us move from reading Psalm 23 to living it, we're exploring spiritual disciplines I believe are reflected in David's posture throughout—practices that positioned his heart toward the Good Shepherd.

Richard Foster writes in Celebration of Discipline: "God has given us the Disciplines of the spiritual life as a means of receiving his grace. The Disciplines allow us to place ourselves before God so he can transform us."

That's what we're doing—making that adjustment, turning our standing foot slightly, so when God moves, we're positioned to follow.
